What a VPN actually does
A virtual private network creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server. This can reduce what the local Wi-Fi operator can observe and changes the IP address visible to websites. It does not remove malware, make unsafe websites trustworthy or eliminate the need for strong account security.
Five questions to ask before choosing a VPN
- Who operates the VPN and where is the company based?
- What logging and privacy claims are made, and are they explained clearly?
- Which protocols and security features are available on your devices?
- Are there bandwidth, server, streaming or device-count limits?
- What are the renewal, cancellation and refund terms?
VPNs bundled with security suites
Some antivirus subscriptions include a VPN, but the details matter. Entry-level plans may impose data caps, fewer locations or device limits, while higher tiers can include broader access. If the VPN is a major reason for your purchase, compare the VPN terms separately rather than assuming every plan includes the same service.
